To curate a collection with intention, you must first learn the structural language of perfume. Skipping the marketing hype requires understanding exactly what is happening inside the bottle:

  • Notes & Accords: A note is an individual olfactory ingredient (such as vanilla, bergamot, or jasmine). An accord is a blend of multiple notes that lose their individual identities to create an entirely new, distinct sensory impression (e.g., a "leather accord" or a "creamy amber accord").
  • The Scent Pyramid: Fragrances are structurally engineered to evolve over time across three distinct layers. Think of a fragrance like a story; the opening notes hook you into the story, and then you're taken through a beginning (top), middle (heart), and ending (base or dry down):
  • Top Notes: The immediate, sharp burst you smell upon the first spray (often crisp citrus, light fruits, or volatile herbs). They dissipate within 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Heart (Middle) Notes: The true character and theme of the perfume. Emerging just as the top notes fade, these are typically fuller florals, warm spices, or green notes that anchor the composition.
  • Base Notes: The heavy, dense foundational molecules (like musks, rich woods, vanillas, and ambers) that linger on the skin for hours after the top notes are a distant memory.
  • Sillage vs. Projection: Projection refers to how far a scent travels outward from your skin into the space around you. Sillage (see-yah-j) is the invisible, haunting trail a perfume leaves behind in the air as you walk through a room. For professionals and educators, a subtle projection with a high-quality sillage is often the ultimate goal for the workspace.   • Layering: The intentional practice of combining two or more distinct fragrances on the skin to alter their chemistry, extend their longevity, or create an entirely custom, signature profile.

Understanding these building blocks is the first step toward transforming your daily routine into a deliberate, sensory ritual.
