Mapping the Scent Families

Every fragrance belongs to an overarching family profile. While there are many nuanced classifications in perfumery, most scents fall into a few primary groups. Identifying which of these core families sparks comfort or nostalgia for you is the easiest way to navigate online reviews without making costly mistakes:

  • The Fresh Family: Crisp, uplifting, and restorative. This family includes bright citrus (bergamot, lemon), marine/aquatic accords (sea salt, ozone), and green, herbaceous notes (crushed mint, tomato leaf). They are perfect for daytime wear, classrooms, and warm weather. My current favorite includes Lazy Sunday Morning by Maison Martin Margiela and my nostalgic favorite is Odyssey by Avon (Amazon).
  • The Floral Family: Ranging from clean and delicate to rich and hypnotic. This family spans classic rose and lavender to sophisticated "white florals" like jasmine, neroli, and orange blossom. My current favorite is Solar Flower by Pacifica (Amazon), which my daughter thinks smells like powder, but I like it. My all-time nostalgic favorite, the scent that started me down this curation path in the 90s is Ysatis (ee-sah-TEES) by Givenchy (Amazon).
  • The Gourmand Family: Intentionally edible, cozy, and deeply nostalgic. Built on complex sweet accords like warm vanilla, boozy rum, toasted praline, or honey, these scents feel incredibly grounding on rainy afternoons or cooler seasons. My favorite scents in this family include Strawberry Letter by Phlur (Amazon) and Gelato Cotton Candy Craze by Amaran.
  • The Woody & Warm Family: Structural, gender-neutral, and intellectual. Characterized by dry cedarwood, creamy sandalwood, earthy patchouli, and resinous ambers, this family provides an expensive-smelling foundation that mimics boutique luxury. My nostalgic representation of this family is Timeless by Avon (Amazon) and my current favorite is Ysatis by Givenchy (Amazon). As a chypre (SHEEP-ruh) floral, this perfume fits into more than one category.
