As much as this will age me, I have to tell you that fragrance journey always leads back to Avon. My grandmother sold these affordable perfumes in her neighborhood before my mom was born and always kept the beautiful glass bottles on her dressing table. My granny wore Timeless and Odyssey, and bought me my first bottle of Sweet Honesty.
So when I started started my first job as a visiting assistant professor, I started looking for old Avon bottles — and that’s when I rediscovered fragrances for myself. I looked up one of my favorite scents, Avon’s Hello Sunshine, on Fragrantica to see what notes it featured. And then I discovered that I could find perfumes that Hello Sunshine fans also liked, which included Timeless and Revlon Jontue and my all-tme favorite Givenchy Ysatis. I discovered aldehydes, which apparently I really like. Who knew?!
But the prices for Givenchy and other perfumes recommended by the site were way out of my league. Jardins de Bagatelle by Guerlain has a beautiful bottle, but I’m not spending $130+ on it. Yves Saint Laurent La Collection Yvresse features a modern design and is a newer chypre (sheep-rah) scent, but I’m not dropping $125 on one bottle.
Not to mention, my daughter told me that all the perfumes I do have smell like powder and old lady. So I was also looking for something more modern or fresh or warm, maybe even a little playful, but definitely not old.
So I headed to TikTok and YouTube to find answers.
Needless to say, we live in a world dominated by visual noise. The fragrance corner of social media has become a sport of rapid-fire "hauls," blinking TikTok Shop links, and creators shouting over music about the latest viral $200 bottle you "absolutely must buy." It is fast, it is loud, and it is exhausting.
But fragrance is not a visual medium. You cannot capture the dry, papery warmth of cedarwood (which my daughter also doesn’t like), the creamy, lactonic comfort of a perfect vanilla, or the crisp snap of a morning bergamot note in a fifteen-second video clip.
Curation Over Clutter
The luxury perfume industry relies heavily on intimidation and exclusivity. They want you to believe that in order to smell sophisticated, you must spend a quarter of your paycheck on a single bottle.
I don't buy into that, and you shouldn't have to either.
My background in education means I look at fragrance through a structured lens. I treat scent profiles like a syllabus and layering combinations like a recipe. There is a beautiful chemistry to how fragrances interact, and when you understand how to decode a scent pyramid, you realize a massive secret: You do not need to spend $250 to smell professional, radiant, or deeply comforting. Through the art of smart curation and strategic layering, you can anchor an affordable drugstore hidden gem or a high-quality dupe with a simple $15 skin-musk oil and create a signature profile that lasts all day and smells intentional.
